Macroinvertebrate functional trait responses to environmental gradients and anthropogenic disturbance in arid-land streams of North Africa

چکیده

We analyzed the influence of land use and water physical-chemical characteristics on trait composition benthic macroinvertebrates in arid-land streams North-East Algeria. Macroinvertebrates were sampled spring season 2015, 2017 2018 at 36 sampling sites distributed along 5 Belezma biosphere reserve. Samples taken from various substratum types using a Surber net. Most variability trait-environment relationship was explained by increasing temperature conductivity downstream gradient. Whilst agriculture higher elevations did not have great functional macroinvertebrate communities, urbanization lower generated significant deviations predictable structures. Owing to natural decrease community diversity study region, entire taxa and/or groups more likely be wiped out response anthropogenic perturbations elevations. Despite human activities, climate-related variables arid lands play major role hydrological regimes that effect instream habitats, chemistry, communities. Given environmental constraints North Africa, even slight increases pressure can negative effects taxonomic

Environmental context and magnitude of disturbance influence trait‐mediated community responses to wastewater in streams

Human land uses and population growth represent major global threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services. Understanding how biological communities respond to multiple drivers of human-induced environmental change is fundamental for conserving ecosystems and remediating degraded habitats. Here, we used a replicated 'real-world experiment' to study the responses of invertebrate communities to ...

Taxonomic and Functional Organization of Macroinvertebrate Communities in Subarctic Streams

Ecological research based on both species and their traits help us to understand the main mechanisms and environmental factors structuring biological communities. In general, variation in community composition is thought to be a consequence of both stochastic and deterministic factors. In stream ecology, the traditional view has been that the local habitat conditions pose a strong environmental...

A meta-analysis of bees' responses to anthropogenic disturbance.

Pollinators may be declining globally, a matter of concern because animal pollination is required by most of the world's plant species, including many crop plants. Human land use and the loss of native habitats is thought to be an important driver of decline for wild, native pollinators, yet the findings of published studies on this topic have never been quantitatively synthesized. Here we use ...

Differences in forest plant functional trait distributions across land-use and productivity gradients.

PREMISE OF STUDY Plant functional traits are commonly used as proxies for plant responses to environmental challenges, yet few studies have explored how functional trait distributions differ across gradients of land-use change. By comparing trait distributions in intact forests with those across land-use change gradients, we can improve our understanding of the ways land-use change alters the d...
